About the memorial: Roadside memorial to those lost in the crash of 466 (RAAF) Sqn Halifax NR179 HD-C close to this location on the night of 3-4/03/45 The aircraft had departed Driffield at 1823 for Ops Kamen On return the aircraft was in the Driffield circuit awaiting permission to land twhen Luftwaffe Intruders were reported The aircraft was ordered to leave the area as the runway lights were doused As the aircraft climbed away to search for an alternative destination, it was almost immediately intercepted by a Ju88 Intruder and shot down The aircraft crashed near to the village of Fridaythorpe at 0110. Four crew were killed, three were injured This was just one of the several Bomber Command aircraft lost during the Luftwaffe’s infamous “last ditch” Unternehmen Gisela
