About the memorial: Memorial Plaque on isolated heathland remembers Flying Officer Hughes Royal Canadian Air Force who was killed close to this site on 14/05/42 He was Pilot of 10 Squadron Halifax R9492 ZA-G that had departed Leeming at 2205 for Ops Dortmund. On its return to the UK the aircraft ran out of fuel. Flying Officer Hughes ordered his six crew to bail out (they all survived) whilst he remained at the controls to attempt a forced landing. Unfortunately, he lost control and the aircraft spiralled down from 7000ft to crash on Greatham Moor at 0455. NB1: This is an approximate position for the memorial NB2: The plaque has incorrectly used modern day phonetics to describe the aircraft's callsign
