About the memorial: Memorial Plaque remembers F/L E.C. Bulmer Killed 1 June 1944. 44 Sqn Lancaster ME794 KM-V had departed Waddington at 2154 for Ops Maisey. The aircraft turned back due to cloud obscuring the target. With a full bomb load, it landed at 0253 at Westcott, Buckinghamshire – the base of 11 OTU. However, it ran off the runway crossed the A41 and was wrecked. The crew all successfully evacuated the aircraft. With multiple UXB’s spread over a wide area, Westcott personnel quickly attempted to clear the affected area. F/L Bulmer, a Pilot with 11 OTU, was the duty Flying Control Officer at Wescott. Actively engaged in the evacuation of properties close to the wrecked Lancaster, he was standing in the garden of a village cottage when one of the bombs detonated killing him instantly He was a family member of the world-famous Hereford based Bulmer’s Cider Company. Buried in Hereford city cemetery, he is additionally remembered in a Stained glass window in the church of St. Mary the Virgin, Westcott- WMO/264379
