About the memorial: Brass plaque on wooden backboard. 1657 HCU Stirling EF352 XT-U had departed Stradishall at 1745 on 22/10/43 for a long-range night NAVEX with an extended training crew of; Pilot, Flight Engineer, 3 x Navigators, Bomb Aimer, Wirless Operator and 2 Air Gunners. All was well until for unknown reasons the aircraft flew into the ground at Rosemaund Farm, Preston Wynne, Herefordshire. All the crew were killed. All bar one of this crew had survived a serious accident just 19 days previously at Earls Colne, when 1657 HCU Stirling W6383 attempted to take off at 2120, it developed a swing, left the runway and the undercarriage subsequently collapsed, completely wrecking the aircraft

ON THE EVENING OF 22 OCTOBER 1943 A SHORT STIRLING BOMBER, EF352/ OF 1657 HEAVY CONVERSION UNIT TOOK OFF FROM ROYAL AIR FORCE/ STRADISHALL, SUFFOLK, ON A NIGHT FLYING EXERCISE. AT 9:20PM. THE/ AIRCRAFT WAS OBSERVED TO DIVE INTO A FIELD AT ROSEMAUND FARM,/ PRESTON WYNNE, KILLING THE ENTIRE CREW OF NINE./ THE CAUSE OF THE/ ACCIDENT HAS NEVER BEEN ESTABLISHED. THE CREW MEMBERS WERE:/ (NAMES)/ THIS PLAQUE IS DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF THESE YOUNG AIRMEN/ WHO FLEW OVER HEREFORDSHIRE AND DIED TOGETHER WHILST SERVING THEIR/ COUNTRIES OF GREAT BRITAIN AND AUSTRALIA. WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.
