About the memorial: On the A153 road bridge over the River Bain is a memorial plaque to two separate air crashes involving Lancaster's from 97 (Straits Settlements) Sqn Lancaster W4175 OF-U had departed Woodhall Spa at 2151 on 29-30/03/44 for Ops Berlin On its return, whilst circling the airfield awaiting permission to land, the aircraft crashed in Coninsgby at 0445. All seven crew were killed. Lancaster PB422 OF-P had departed Coningsby at 1123 on 13/07/45 for a Bombing Exercise. Almost immediately the Port Outer Engine burst into flames. The aircraft climbed steeply, stalled and crashed. The crew of four were all killed.
