About the memorial: Memorial Plaque in town Lifeboat Stn to crew of 49 Sqn Hampden W3027 EA-A 49 Sqn Hampden W3027 EA-A had departed RAF Scampton on 28/11/40 for Ops Hamburg On its return flight when it was intercepted and shot down by a Luftwaffe Night Fighter captained by Lt Heinz Volker of II/NJG2. The Pilot successfully ditched the aircraft in the North Sea off Skegness, however before the crew could be rescued (and help was already en-route) they were all drowned. One was never recovered. In 1994, during a routine training exercise at very low tide, the crew of the Skegness Lifeboat spotted the yellow tip of a propeller sticking out of the water. On further investigation, it turned out to be from this same aircraft. It was later recovered and put on display in the Lifeboat Stn until Feb 2017. Due to the delivery of a much larger vessel minimising space inside the facility, the RNLI crew could no longer keep the propeller which has now been donated to the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre at East Kirkby

Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.
