About the memorial: This is a memorial commemorating an event which happened during the Blitz by the German luftwaffe (air force) on London in 1940. Hundreds of people were sheltering in a railway arch / small street underneath London Bridge train station when a direct hit caused serious casualties. Note: Since I took the attached images in March 2007 the entire street has been pedestrianised and was re-opened as a walk through shopping location in October 2018. Contemporary news reports indicate that the original plaque as pictured has been returned to it's original position.
