About the memorial: As this is a blue plaque it is not technically a war memorial as outlined on the 'What is a war memorial?' page. The details have been left on the website at this time. This is a memorial commemorating an event which happened during the Blitz by the German luftwaffe (air force) on London in 1940. Hundreds of people were sheltering in a railway arch / small street underneath London Bridge train station when a direct hit caused serious casualties. Note: Since I took the attached images in March 2007 the entire street has been pedestrianised and was re-opened as a walk through shopping location in October 2018. Contemporary news reports indicate that the original plaque as pictured has been returned to its original position.

As a conservation charity which gives grants War Memorials Trust can support repair and conservation works that follow best conservation practice. Grants are awarded from funds raised by the charity so money available is limited and is therefore focused on eligible war memorials.

War Memorials Trust’s Definition of a war memorial for funding purposes helpsheet explains which war memorials are eligible and ineligible for funding.
