About the memorial: This memorial stone forms part of the group comprising the main war memorial, a small obelisk to the murdered members of the UDR and this. It commemorates Lt. Geoffrey Cather of the RIF who died on 1st - 2nd July 1916 near Hamel during the first Battle of the Somme whilst bringing back injured men from "no man's land" under heavy German fire.
