About the memorial: Memorial within the confines of the Golf Club remembers the crew of 1652 HCU Halifax DG226 who were killed when their aircraft crashed at this site on 24 August 1944 The aircraft had departed Marston Moor at 1429 for a routine training flight. Almost immediately after departure the Port Outer Engine caught fire. The crew lost control of the aircraft which rolled over and dived vertically into the ground at Wetherby Golf Course between the (now disused railway line and the River Wharfe
