About the memorial: F/L R.N. Stubbs DFC DFM - a member of the AFDU (but temporarily attached to 103 Sqn) was Pilot of 103 Sqn Lancaster W4857 PM-V that had departed Elsham Wolds on 27/02/43 for a routine training flight During the flight, the aircraft suffered partial failure of the tail assembly. The Pilot ordered his crew to bale out before he attempted to make an emergency landing at base but the aircraft crashed into a wood in the grounds of Elsham Hall. At the time of his death, the highly experienced F/L Stubbs was on his third tour of Ops having previously completed two full tours on both IX Sqn & 75 (NZ) Sqn Further info via the following link;
