About the memorial: Memorial to Major John George Blackburne, 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regt). Charterhouse School. Commissioned into the Derbyshire Regiment. He retired in 1898 but rejoined in 1900 and fought in the Second Anglo Boer War in South African. He was later a member of the Imperial Yeomanry. In the Great War he served with 9th Bn. The Sherwood Foresters. Mentioned in Dispatches. Killed in action at Gallipoli aged 42 years. Buried in grave I. C. 2. of Green Hill Cemetery, Turkey.
