About the memorial: St. James School, 22 Bargate, Grimsby, was founded in 1880 as a Choir school to supply choristers to St. James Church, Grimsby. In 1897, the school moved to Bargate, and by 1904 was then named as St. James Choir School. Since 1975 its name has been St James' School, but its link with the parish church remains. The choristers are educated there, receive a choral training and sing Evensong three times a week in the church as well as the services on Sundays and major festivals. Girls were admitted as day-pupils in 1973 and as boarders two years later. There are now about 200 day-pupils, and 40 boarders in three Houses. The War memorial is situated in the hall of the main school site in Bargate. As you enter the door, it hangs on the wall. It consists of a large wooden polished board, in two halves with the school badge at the top. Below is the inscription at the top of the first board erected in memory of the old boys of the school in fell in the Great War & The Second World War. Then a list of names, again surnames and initials:- As can been seen from the photograph the names have been painted onto the surface of the wood in a gilt paint, and whole memorial has been beautifully maintained, very shiny and unmarked. The same names are also recorded on a memorial in St. James Church, on the wooden screen fronting the War Memorial Chapel.
