About the memorial: This impressive Roll of Honour is situated inside the Meeting room of the Transport & General Workers Union office, Cleethorpes Road, Grimsby. The building is sited almost underneath the flyover, and adjacent to the Grimsby Telegraph office. We gained access to the memorial by speaking to the receptionist and then were shown inside the committee room and there was this large wooden memorial complete with black incised lettering along the wall of the room, measuring 2750mm by 1140mm. The offices of the union who represented the men on the memorial was originally situated in Park Street, Grimsby, in 1975, when the offices moved to its present site in Cleethorpes Road, this union merged with the TGWU, and part of terms of the amalgamation was that the memorial would be cared for by the TGWU. The memorial only refers to local men who sailed out of Grimsby. The memorial is in memory of the Second World War and is in two parts. The first part of the memorial is entitled as below:- In some cases men were decorated with both medals and mentioned in despatches e.g. Reade H.F. received a DSM and was mentioned in despatches. The memorial is very good condition, highly polished and is maintained by the TGWU.
