About the memorial: There was a most impressive ceremony at the Boston Guildhall on Saturday morning last, when the Boston Court of Sewers unveiled a brass tablet, placed on the wall of the room in which the meeting of the Commissioners are held, in memory of the late Meaburn Staniland who was killed in Belgium on July 29th 1915. Unveiled by Mr. F. E. Bowser on the 22nd December 1917 Cost £31 5s.

MEMORIAL TABLET UNVEILED AT BOSTON

A SPORTSMAN AND A GENTLEMAN

	There was a most impressive ceremony at the Boston Guildhall on Saturday morning last, when the Boston Court of Sewers unveiled a brass tablet, placed on the wall of the room in which the meeting of the Commissioners are held, in memory of the late Meaburn Staniland who was killed in Belgium on July 29th 1915.
	There were present Messrs. W. Pooles, W. R. Porter, W, Dennis, C. Parker, J. H. Dennis, I. B. Ketton, J. Clarke, F. E. Bowser, E. Bowser, W. Gilding, J. Maltby, E. Richardson, J. Tunnard, J. Eley, A. Cooke-Yarborough, W. E. Pearson, R. J. Slator, T. Kitwood, F. Brett, E. Welsh, S. Marjason, and A. W. Grocock.
	Mr. F. E. Bowser: It is well within your recollection that sometime ago this Court suggested a memorial tablet should be erected to the memory of our late Joint Clerk – Capt. Meaburn Staniland. I practically acted as secretary and treasurer, and I have collect most of the money, with the assistance of one or two friends. The tablet has been erected here by Mr. H. Sherwin.
	Mr. F. E. Bowser, then, all standing, pulled a cord, releasing a Union Jack, and so displaying the brass tablet, bearing the inscription:
IN PROUD MEMORY OF
	Meaburn Staniland, Captain, 4th
	Lincolnshire Regiment, Clerk to
	the Commissioners of Sewers for
	the Wapentake of Skirbeck, and
	Town Clerk of Boston. A gallant
	Gentleman who have his life for
	his country,    near Hooge,     in
	Belgium, on the 29th day of July,
	1915. This tablet is placed here
	by the Commissioners attending
	the Boston Court, to perpetuate
	his  memory,  and  to  mark  the
	affection and esteem in which he
	                      was held
	Mr. Bowser:	This tablet has been erected to the memory of our late Joint Clerk – Meaburn Staniland – to perpetuate his memory. It is with mixed feelings of pleasure and regret that I have this important duty to perform, to the memory of one for whom we had the greatest respect and admiration. The name Staniland has been connected with the public affairs of the Boston District now for a considerable time. Unfortunately, this son of Mr. Staniland’s, and another, fell fighting for their King and country. By your generosity we have been able to erect this tablet to his memory, and it is with proud memory that we have erected it. May it please God that our respected Clerk, Mr. R. W. Staniland, may have health and strength to continue the good work he is doing in this town until another member of the family shall take his place, (Hear, hear),
	Mr. W. Dennis: I should to endorse everything Mr. Bowser has said in reference to the late Capt. Meaburn Staniland. I trust that his wish for the preservation of the father my be granted, and that in future years a successor of the name of Staniland may rise up to do the duties of Clerkship to this court.
	Mr. J. Maltby: I should like to be associated with what has been said. I knew Meaburn Staniland all his life. He was a very good man, and I regret that we have to perform this sad duty today, He has set a noble example to everyone to follow.
	Mr. Eley:	As the author of the inscription on that tablet, and as one who possibly had as much official relation with the late Town Clerk as anyone in this room, excepting those in his office, I wish to offer my very humble, but none the less sincere, testimony to the esteem in which I held him, and in which I think he was held by those who had the good fortune to know him. He was the perfect gentleman, Everything, I believe, which was calculated to make a man noble was exemplified in Meaburn Staniland. His courage, sincerity, his truth, his generosity, his manly kindness manifested itself on every conceivable occasion, and to those who had the privilege that I had, to meet him very often, it is a source of very pleasant reflection. It is a mournful duty we have to perform. The tragedy that befell our esteemed friend has fallen with almost equal severity upon many in some degree, and if this war keeps on for a considerable time longer-as there is every appearance it it-God knows how many families in this country will be touched by the loss of those very near and dear to them. The tablet will be an indication and a sure sign to generations to come of the high esteem in which he was held, and it will show the world what a grand-hearted patriot he was.
	Mr. Pooles:	As Chairman of this Court, I am sure I am quite in sympathy with every remark that has fallen from the previous speakers. I was myself, in other matters, so closely connected with Captain Staniland all his life that I can re-echo every sentiments that has been said in his praise. I only trust that those he has left behind, the rising generation, will not forget the deeds of the father, and that one of the Staniland’s may in future be the Clerk to this Court (Hear, hear).
	Mr Bowser remarked that the total amount subscribed was £33. 10s., and that the cost of the tablet was £31 5s., so that there was balance of £2 5s. He would like to know what was to done with it?
	It was decided to hand over the balance to the Y.M.C.A. Fund.
	Mr. Bowser added that he received a donation from Mr. Wm. Garfit, who “He was the Captain of my old Company, and as his senior officer I have great pleasure in acknowledging his services.”
	Mr. Pooles said he thought the thanks of the Commissioners were due to Mr. F. E. Bowser and Mr. J. Ely, and he proposed a hearty vote of thanks to them.
	Mr. Porter seconded.
	Mr. Bowser: It has been a labour of love with me, I knew Meaburn Staniland from a smack by, and always found him a sportsman and a through gentleman. I had the pleasure of proposing him as a Joint Clerk, and I regret that we are here today to erect this tablet to his memory, and that he has fallen like so many others. Let us sincerely trust that the nest time we meet it will be in peace times.
