About the memorial: All Saints, Heneage Road, Grimsby – Roll of Honour (TA 270093) Location The Roll of Honour is currently stored at the North East Lincolnshire Archives, in Town Hall Square, Grimsby, DN31 1HX, telephone number 01472 323585 The Reading Room at the Archives is open to visitors from 10am to 1230pm and then 130pm to 400pm on weekdays only. It is advisable to ring before attending as there is limited space. There is a small car park outside with a 1 hour restriction, but the nearest car park is the multi- storey in Osborne St. There are 1390 names listed altogether, mostly in alphabetical order, though if you look closely at the list you will notice that this is not strictly followed. In some cases ranks are there, together with service, regiment and decorations, but in others just the name is given. It would therefore appear that the roll was made up from names provided by the relatives of the deceased, and from the living. There is a distinction made between those who were killed outright and those who died from their injuries, or who died in some other way. The wounded are also listed, and those who survived unscathed. The persons killed have crosses before their names and in some cases these are made of gold leaf, suggesting that their relatives paid for this decoration. The names are recorded in black ink, into a leather bound book, measuring 270mm x 230mm x 90mm thick. Below is an example of a typical page – note the crosses some in gold leaf. History of the Memorial According to Kelly’s Directory for Lincolnshire 1922 in Great Grimsby “ All Saints is a parish formed in 1898 from the parish of Clee. The church in Heneage Road was erected in 1906 at a cost of £8000. In 1919, a window was placed in the east wall of the church as a memorial to the men of the parish who fell during the Great War 1914 to 1918 designed and erected by Barliston and Gryllis, the cost being raised by subscription amongst parishioners” The Directory makes no mention of the Roll of Honour, which still exists whilst the window does not, the church having become derelict following a merger with a neighbouring parish, and has been pulled down. The Roll of Honour was given to the Archives by a parishioner in 1989. It was rebound by the then archive conservator Tim Edwards, using a grant provided by a local Grimsby company. The archives gave a receipt to the Rev M.D. Liles in August 1990 for the Roll of Honour. The memorial is in very good condition and is stored in the archives. Photograph showing All Saints' Church, Grimsby, being demolished in January 1997. The church of All Saints on Heneage Road was built in 1905-6 to the designs of the Cutts brothers of London. John Edward Knight Cutts (1847-1938) was a prolific architect who designed 46 churches in Britain between 1873 and 1912; he usually worked in partnership with his brother, John Priston Cutts. The church cost approximately £8,000 to build and its first incumbent was the Reverend A W Ballachey, who had worked in the area for many years. The church was severely damaged in a bombing raid on the night of 13th July 1943 and was restored in the early 1950s by Nicholson & Rushton, architects. The church became redundant in 1991 and the Grimsby architect Rex Critchlow fought a long campaign to save the building. Sadly his efforts were in vain and All Saints was demolished in 1997.
