About the memorial: Memorial to Lieutenant Edward Matthew Holland, the Worcestershire Regiment. Son of Edward Ernest Holland and Margaret Susanna Holland (daughter of Matthew James Dick, Shipowner), of 44 Preston Park Avenue, Brighton. Educated at Dean Close Memorial School, Cheltenham. Was an Estate Agent. Commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion Worcestershire Regiment on 17 March 1915. Went to France 19 July 1915. Killed in action by a German Sniper East of Lesboeufs, North of Combles, on the Somme battle-front aged 22 years. Buried in a shell hole where he fell. He is also commemorated on Pier and Face 5 A and 6 C of the Thiepval Memorial.
