About the memorial: This very striking memorial lies in the Lady Chapel, fixed to the wall of the chancel. At first glance it appears to be a very large wooden cupboard, with a decorative title, but when the doors are opened, and a three-panelled memorial is seen, with the names of the fallen of Cleethorpes, written in a black painted script, which is some places is very difficult to read. The writing has to be examined from very close up, and in some places is almost illegible. It is clearly in need of restoration, a fact that the vicar of the church, Captain Paul Fitzpatrick, formerly of the Church Army is well aware. A grant of monies has been promised by the local British Legion but I am sure that much more will be needed to restore this lovely memorial to its former glory. There are 329 names on the three panels, all men of Cleethorpes who died during the 1st World War, 1914 to 1919. There are three panels altogether, the first panel, the right-hand side panel as you view it from the floor of the Lady Chapel is entitled NAVY ARMY. It would be easy to assume that the names listed below the titles were persons from those services, but no ranks, regiment, ship or unit are given, just initials and surnames. The middle panel, in the centre of the cabinet has five columns altogether, two columns either side of a crucifix, with a short column beneath it. This panel is entitled NAVY ARMY FISHERMEN ETC, but it’s not clear if the names listed below belong to those services. The format is the same, just initials and surnames, and one or two are almost illegible. The third panel, the right-hand panel, is entitled ARMY FISHERMAN & TRANSPORT, and is divided into two columns. The first column, which appears to be under the heading of ARMY, is broken by a space and then there are four other names. The second column appears to be under the titles FISHERMEN & TRANSPORT. Below the columns is an inscription. I have copied the names from each panel and listed them below in the columns in which they appear. On the right hand panel I have shown the inscription, part of which is almost illegible. It would seem that the triptych has been affected by some sort of water damage causing the writing to fade. The whole memorial measures 1720mm high x 2330mm wide and 300mm deep. The top inscription reads “For God, King and Country”
