About the memorial: Memorial to Lieutenant Thomas Hatfield Evans, Machine Gun Section, 3rd Battalion Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.). Only son of Thomas and Alice Stewart Evans of Honours Mead, Bovingdon. Served in the Second Anglo Boer War with the Leicestershire Yeomanry 1899-1901 (Queens medal with 4 clasps). A machine agent before enlistment for WW1. Killed in action aged 33 years when carrying one of his wounded men to safety. Mentioned in dispatches for conspicuous valour. Commemorated on Special Memorial A. 9 of Shrapnel Valley Cemetery, Gallipoli, Çanakkale, Turkey.

In loving memory of Thomas Hatfield Evans, only son of Thomas and Alice Stewart Evans, aged 33, Lieut Machine Gun Section, 3rd Battn A.I.F. who was killed on the 26th April 1915 in Gallipoli, when carrying, under heavy enemy fire, one of his wounded men into safety. Mentioned in dispatches for conspicuous valour. Served in the South African War with the Leicestershire yeomanry 1899-1901. Queens Medal with four clasps. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
