About the memorial: Memorial to Lieutenent Frederic de Vere Bruce Allfrey, 9th (Queen's Royal) Lancers. Only son of Frederic and Maud de Vere Allfrey, of Ashridgewood, Wokingham, Berks. Educated at Wellington College, Berkshire 1905-1909 and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst 1910. Commissioned on 15 Feb 1911 and joined his Regiment in Canterbury, Kent. Promoted to Lieutenant in Jan 1913. He deployed with his Regiment to France at the start of WW1 and was killed in action in the battle of Montcel, at Frétoy aged 22 years; the last charge on horseback of British cavalry in the war. It was reported that he was shot by a wounded German after he had dismounted to extract a lance from a wounded comrade’s leg. He was buried in Frétoy Communal Cemetery at Seine-et-Marne.
