About the memorial: Memorial to 2nd Lieutenant William Leslie Lovell, 8th Battalion the Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment). Son of Edgar Henry and Lavinia Maud Lovell, of Croydon, London. Gentleman Cadet at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Commissioned into the Royal West Kent Regiment 27 Oct 1916. Attached to 25 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps. Killed in aerial combat near St Pol, France aged 21 years with his observer, Lt. W W Fitzgerald. Buried in grave V. A. 8. of Lapugnoy Military Cemetery, Lapugnoy, Departement du Pas-de-Calais, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France, beside Lt Fitzgerald. He is also commemorated on a brass memorial plaque in St John the Baptist Church, Croydon. Date of death given as 27 Jul 1917 on the CWGC website.
