About the memorial: North wall of Chancel - 940 x 820mm Mahogany – finely carved in bas relief, coloured and gilded, the whole is mounted on two wooden corbels in the same material. Dedicated in 1947 by the Rector. Approximately square without the corbels, the memorial is framed rather like a fire surround. the central portion bears the regimental badge of the Green Howards on the left and the family crest (a cockatrice) on the right. both are painted in the correct heraldic colours. Between them, a cross surrounded by a victor’s laurel, both gilded. around the cross is the word fo rt it er (fortiter) (resolute – from the family motto). below this is the inscription and at the base the words “fortiter gerit crucem”
