About the memorial: A painting of Squadron Leader Mahinder Singh Pujii D.F.C. and the citation for the award of his Distinguished Flying Cross. Sqd. Ldr. Pujji was one of 18 Indian pilots to answer the call to enlist in the RAF during the early part of the war - only 6 of these original pilots went on to become fighter pilots the others went on to bombers. Sqd. Ldr Pujii was shot down twice, once crossing the English channel after a sortie in France - he crash landed in Kent. The other was in North Africa. He won his D.F.C. flying out of "Cox's Bazaar" in Burma when he was instrumental in finding and aiding the rescue of a unit of 300 African Soldiers under the command of the Americans who were cut off from support without any ammunition or rations.
