If you believe your project is eligible for a grant you should complete the Pre-application enquiry form. You will need to be registered and logged in to complete this.

The Pre-application enquiry form is a series of questions to see if your project is eligible. If it is, you will need to provide further details and submit current colour photographs of the war memorial in either a png, gif, jpg or jpeg format.

You can save your Pre-application enquiry form as you go along. Once submitted War Memorials Trust will respond.

HUTCHINSON Ralph. Private 9214. 1st Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action at Bois Grenier, France 25th September 1915, aged 25 years. Particulars have been received by Mrs M. A. Hutchinson, The Old Farm, Fulbeck, from Lce-Corpl. Cooling respecting the death of her	 son. Pte. Ralph Hutchinson, who was killed in action on September 25th last. Writing from France, Lce.-Corpl. Cooling says. “What I have to tell you is anything but good news, and yet I feel I must tell you as it will enlighten you as to how as to how poor Ralph gave his life to try and save a pal whom he had been misled to believe was badly wounded in a German trench, which was false, for I was wounded at the back of our lines. I made enquires as to who last saw Ralph, and I could meet with no success until today (October 17th), when Lce.-Corpl. Thompson, who was in the same platoon as Ralph and I, gave me the information I was seeking for It appears that after I left with their prisoners, they had to retire from the trenches, and Ralph got hit in the thigh, a flesh wound, caused by a fragment of shell. He was bandaged up and advised to go into a dug-out until the shelling abated a bit, and he did so, but on hearing that I was lying in the German trench wounded, he got up despite his wounds, and went to search for me, heedless of his own life. He got between our lines and the Germans, when he got hit again by a shell, in the head causing him serious injuries from which he died. He was alive when fetched in, and was put into the same dug-out which he had just left to go in search of me, I tell you I feel it very much to think that he lost his life through searching for me, while at the same time I was in hospital. We were attached to each other, and always said, when talking together, that whichever of us got in a tight corner the other would help him out, or lose his life in the attempt. And Ralph stuck to his promise, fir he knew the Germans were in the trench he had just left, so he must have known the danger he going into, but it was the thought of me, lying there, that made him go, and no braver deed could be done on the battlefield than that. It also showed what a good comrade he was. And I wish other people to know what caused his death. It grieves me to think about it, but it was not fault of mine, as you will admit, and if you don’t mind, I wound like you to have this letter published in the “Lincolnshire Chronicle” as he had other pals who, who I think, ought to know how bravely he died. We had been the best of pals from boys. But were more attached to each other since we had been out here, had fought side by side for months, and now I am robbed of the best pal anyone could ever have had.”
