About the memorial: A brass plaque engraved with two names of River Pilots from Gravesend who were killed during WW1. The memorial was unveiled on Monday 15 March 1920 in the Sea Pilot's room at the Terrace Pier in Gravesend before being re-located at a later date to St George's along with two other memorials and Colours/Standards of local associations. Pilot (North Channel) Hubert J. Redman Lighthouse and Pilotage Authorities Died 15 April 1918 S.S. "Pomeranian." was torpedoed and sunk by UC.77 in the English Channel He lived at 37 The Grove, Gravesend Lieutenant Claude Bennett Walker D.S.C. (former Trinity House Pilot) Distinguished Service Cross awarded for service during dangerous mine-laying operations - London Gazette 1 October 1917 p.10153 Royal Naval Reserve Died 18 May 1918 H.M.S. Perdita
