About the memorial: Memorial to 17726 Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Henry Ely, King's Shropshire Light Infantry. Son of Thomas Robert and Arabella Walpole Ely. Husband of Muriel Mary Ely, of Fleet, Hampshire. Educated at Worksop college. Gentleman Cadet at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Commissioned into the King's Shropshire Light Infantry 31 Aug 1922. Served in the army of occupation in Germany after the first world war. Was stationed at Quetta, India (now Pakistan) at the time of the great earthquake in 1035. Company commander at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Died aged 41 years when attached to HQ 36th (London) Division just after the battle of Enfidaville (19-21 Apr 1943). Buried in grave VIII. E. 23 of Enfidaville War Cemetery, Enfidaville, Sousse, Tunisia. He is also commemorated on a memorial at St Giles Church, Cheadle, Staffordshire and on the Roll of Honour in Kimpton village, Hertfordshire.
