About the memorial: John Coupland Hospital was extended after WWI with funds raiased in memory of the soldiers who were killed and a plaque was put up The plaque was moved (perhaps in the 1970s when a new building was added). It can still be seen near the accident department. In December 1920 a ceremony was held to mark the laying of the foundation stone. The “Gainsborough News” reported that one of the speakers at the ceremony said “war memorials should not be merely bricks and mortar but useful, particularly for the benefit of our disabled men or for the wives and orphans of those who had fallen.” Less than a year later, in September 1921, the extension opened. It housed an out-patients department, an octagonal shaped operating theatre, a department for the treatment of men injured in the war and on the upper floor there was accommodation for nurses. On the wall outside was a plaque with an inscription, “In Memoriam—1914-1918.” Peter Bradshaw
