About the memorial: F/O Tillett was Pilot of 238 Sqn Hurricane V6814 "S" that had been scrambled from Chilbolton to intercept a formation of German aircraft. High over Fareham, he was intercepted and shot down. The aircraft made a slow descent with the Pilot possibly mortally wounded and it was witnessed to make a wheels up landing at nearby White Dell Farm. However the Pilot was observed to be slumped forward. As a rescue attempt was being made, the aircraft caught fire and burnt out This loss occurred in the same action as that of Sgt Adair who is remembered on a memorial on Portsdown Hill, a mile or so to the East of this location
