About the memorial: Memorial to Lieutenant Cyril de Villiers Hinde, MC, 2nd Battalion the Royal Berkshire Regiment. Son of Lt Col Wiliam Henry Hinde (late Royal Engineers) and Mildred Hinde, of Heathcote, Wellington College, Berkshire. Educated at Eagle House Preparatory School and Wellington College, Berkshire 1910-1914. Gentleman Cadet at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst 1914-1915. Commissioned into the Royal Berkshire Regiment 17 Apr 1915. Awarded the Military Cross (London Gazette 18 June 1917) "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He led out a patrol and inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy. Later, although wounded, he remained in command and successfully withdrew his men". He died of wounds received in action in Belgium (confirmed on German lists) aged 20 years. Also commemorated on Panel 45 of the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Ypres (Ieper), Arrondissement Ieper, West Flanders, Belgium, on the Eagle House Preparatory School Book of Remembrance and on the Roll of Honour at Wellington College, Berkshire.
