About the memorial: Hopton wood stone tablet set within a moulded Ancaster stone frame. Frame has a carved paterae and is surmounted by a battlemented cresting above which is a niche with the figure of St George and the dragon in it. Our war memorial commemorates over forty ex-pupils and staff who lost their lives in the service of our nation. We are proud that two former pupils were awarded the highest military honour, The Victoria Cross. Albert Ball, V.C was a pupil in 1906/07 and Joseph Tombs, V.C. was a pupil in the early 1900’s. The top 2 lines are in very formal latin, of the type seen on Italian monuments, the translation by Morris Felton is The honourable death of these brave-hearted young men was not in vain. The very model for our scholars.

It is with deep regret we report the death, through wounds, of Trooper Fred Adcock. The official information was received by his parents Mr. and Mrs. H. Adcock, at the end of last week. The deceased joined up on August 5th, 1914, having been connected with the Yeomanry for some time. Sailed for Egypt October 1915, on the Mercian, which was shelled in the Mediterranean. Previous to joining up, he assisted his father in farming. Regular member of Football and Cricket Teams. Special hymns were sung and the Dead March in Saul was played on Sunday evening in the Parish church in honour of the fallen hero.

Corby Glen man who died 100 years ago is remembered in WW1 project

A village which lost 24 men in the First World War is remembering another young man who lost his life 100 years ago. 
Private Fred John Adcock, of A Squadron, 1st/1st Lincolnshire Yeomanry, died of his wounds in Palestine on August 30 1917.

The Corby Glen man, together with those others who lost their lives, is being remembered in a special project being put together by local man Chris Wesley. Chris aims to publish a book detailing the stories of all 24 men in November 2018 to mark the centenary of the end of the war. Chris’s research has uncovered the intriguing story of Fred and his older brothers, Harry and Percy, who all joined A Squadron in Grantham. As well as the three brothers, their cousin Charles Adcock and Thomas William Henry ‘Harry’ Musson also joined on the same day. Their service numbers were consecutive, from 1641 to 1645. Another Corby Glen man, George Fisher, had been in the Yeomanry for some years and was instrumental in getting the five men to enlist in November 1913. He received half a crown for each recruit. They were expected to parade with their own horse or a borrowed one.

It was not until October 27, 1915 that the men were mobilised overseas and they sailed from Southampton on His Majesty’s Transport Mercian bound for Salonika. The ship anchored off Gibraltar on November 2. As it continued eastwards the next day it was intercepted by a German submarine which fired its 88mm deck gun at the ship, destroying its signals room. The Mercian took evasive action and, after 90 minutes of battle, the submarine gave up the chase. The attack on the Mercian resulted in 22 men killed, 55 wounded, 22 missing and 19 horses killed. The ship’s destination later changed and the Yeomanry arrived in Alexandria in Egypt on November 22 1915. They were deployed against the Senussi Arabs, who were in revolt in western Egypt.

Up to the end of March 1916, the regiment had not suffered any fatalities and the rebellion was crushed. It would not be until March 1917 that the Lincolnshire Yeomanry took part in its first major battle – the first battle of Gaza. On August 30, the regiment was attacked at Goz El Bazal by three enemy aircraft, which dropped 21 bombs, wounding eight men, including Fred, and killing Private Joseph Beck, who came from Sleaford. The regiment returned to El Shauth where Fred died of his wounds. Later the regiment had to give up its horses and became a machine gun unit in France. Up until then the Lincolnshire Yeomanry had only suffered 60 fatalities. In September, Percy Adcock was severely wounded when he was hit by a shell fragment, breaking his jaw. He later said he was ‘left for dead’ at the dressing station and it was only when an  orderly saw a little movement that it was realised he was still alive. Percy had to undergo facial reconstruction leaving him with some scarring and a stutter for the rest of his life. Corby Glen soldiers Charles Adcock, Harry Musson and Ted Lambert were still with the unit, 20km from Mons, when notification of the Armistice came on November 11. Chris says that the World War One project team in Corby Glen has identified 87 men from the village who served in the forces during the war. Citation:
An extract from the "London Gazette" dated 8th June 1917, records the following:- "For most conspicuous and consistent bravery from the 25th of April to the 6th of May, 1917, during which period Capt. Ball took part in twenty-six combats in the air and destroyed eleven hostile aeroplanes, drove down two out of control, and forced several others to land. In these combats Capt. Ball, flying alone, on one occasion fought six hostile machines, twice he fought five and once four. When leading two other British aeroplanes he attacked an enemy formation of eight. On each of these occasions he brought down at least one enemy. Several times his aeroplane was badly damaged, once so seriously that but for the most delicate handling his machine would have collapsed, as nearly all the control wires had been shot away. On returning with a damaged machine he had always to be restrained from immediately going out on another. In all, Capt. Ball has destroyed forty-three German aeroplanes and one balloon, and has always displayed most exceptional courage, determination and skill."

	Second-Lieut. Bonshor, South Staffs, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Bonshor, 169, Harlaxton Road, reported missing since March 21st, the opening day of the great German offensive, is now able to give the re-assuring news that he is a prisoner of war. On Monday his parents received a letter, dated March 31st, written by a friend of their son, as follows “I am a prisoner of war in German hands, and at present in hospital, shot through the left arm and right shoulder, but not severely. I am unable to write. This is being done by a brother officer. Don’t worry; I am comfortable under the circumstances, and am being treated kindly. Please inform all my friends. As soon as I can use my right arm I will write and let you know my address.” Second Lieutenant was a scholar at the Wesleyan school, afterwards proceeding to the King’s School, thence to Peterborough Training Collage for two years, with the object of taking up teaching as a profession. On completion of his studies he obtained the position of assistant-master at St. John’s School, West Ealing. He enlisted in the Hunts Cycle Corps, in October, 1915, and after training was on coast duty for two years. In January last he received a commission in the South Staffs, and proceeded to France. Second-Lieut. Bonshor is aged 23. He has two brothers serving – one in the Civil Service Rifles, and another in the R.G.A.

	Mr. and Mrs W. Bonshor, Harlaxton Road, Grantham, have received the sad new from the President of the Red Cross Society in Stendal, Germany, of the death of their youngest son, Second-Lieut. J. Bonshor, South Staffs (late Hunts. Cyclists.) He was wounded and taken prisoner on the 21st March, and was, up to within a week of hearing the news of his death, believed to be progressing favourably. The cause of death is stated to be phthisis, and he was interred in Stendal Cemetery, July 29th, with Military honours.

	News reached Thurlby on Saturday last the Pte. Leslie Burn, Norfolk Regiment, had died of wounds received in action. His parents resided for many years in Thurlby prior to relocating in Lynn. Pte Burn was previously employed in the offices of Messrs. Sneath and Sons, Hay & Straw Merchants.

	Among the many reported missing on the occasion of the German offensive on March 21s is no 200556. Pte. H. S. Collingwood, of the Lincolns, whose home is at Grantham. He is the son of the late Mr. Reuben Collingwood, and one of the best known amongst the footballers and cricketers of Grantham and a goodly radius; as a fisherman he was also widely known, and spent many hours on the banks of the local waters. He enlisted almost immediately after war broke out, and has been in France from 1915.

	News of the death of Lt. Coultas, was received in a telegram from the war office on Saturday, stating that he had been killed in action on Sept. 26. Thus has another promising career been sacrificed in the great fight for civilisation. In a letter received from his Colonel, he relates how the young officer died whilst gallantly leading his men, and pays tribute to his excellent character, “I am deeply grieved,” write the Colonel, “to have to report to you the death of your son. He had been with us all through, and was one of the best and most reliable officers I had, and we were all very fond of him.” Speaking of Lieut. Coultas heroic death, the Colonel says:- “It happened last evening. There has been an attack, and a party of Germans with bombs and machine guns had been left behind. As his company was making a communication trench behind the advancing line, the concealed Germans opened fire on our men. Your son gallantly led his platoon against them, but in so doing so was shot and killed instantly. I am pleased to say his platoon, which had been a good one, carried on. Having got some smoke bombs, the surrounded the place and threw them in killing several Germans, and taking an officer and 33 men prisoners. The platoon lost heavily but has the satisfaction of avenging the loss of your son and of their comrades.”
	The deceased officer was the only son pf the late Mr. Tom Coultas, was born on November 4th, 1893. He was educated at King’s School, Grantham, and Haileybury College, Berks, and proceed to Queen’s College, Cambridge in October 1912. He stayed at Cambridge six terms, passing both parts of the special examination in history with second class honours, June 1914. He was allowed three terms, and the special examination in military subjects on his Military Service, and so qualified for the B,A, degree, which he took in October 1915. Etc. etc.

	Mr and Mrs Dickinson, of 160, Alexandra Road, received a letters on the 3rd Nay  from their son’s officer 2nd Lt. G. Brough informing them of their son’s death on the 23rd inst. A Spittlegate School boy in 1910 won a Grantham Grammar School Foundation Scholarship and a Kesteven Minor Scholarship, entered the Grantham Grammar Scholl and during his stay there earned the commendation of his master. After leaving school he worked for a time in Mr. Lee’s office, Welby Street, before leaving to become a clerk in the Great Northern Railway Company. He was fist in the Caythorpe booking-office, and then in the Grantham Goods office, prior to being transferred to Retford. Last June, enlisted in the K.R.R.C. and during his training was top in the bombing tests and fourth in shooting. Ten weeks ago, while barely nineteen years old, volunteered to form a Lewis Gun team, in which he was serving when killed.

   The death of Mr. Charles Henry Doubleday, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Doubleday, of Millfield, took place on the 11th isn’t, at Port of Spain, Trinidad, West Indies, in his 22nd year. Deceased joined the Naval Service as assistant clerk, and when the fleet was mobilised at the outbreak of war he joined a battle-cruiser, where he qualified for the post of Assistant-Paymaster. Towards the end of last year the Commander of his vessel was offered an important appointment at Port of Spain and offered our young friend the post of clerk which he accepted. Only two or three letters have been received from him, the last early in February, when, in writing home, he complained very much of the heat, and on Friday a telegram was received from the board of admiralty by his parents apprising them of his death. The sympathy of the whole parish goes out to Mr. and Mrs. Doubleday in their sad loss. The deceased was at King’s School, Grantham, and there, as at home, he was highly respected for his gentlemanly demeanour.

	The greatest sympathy will be felt for Mr and Mrs Emerton, of Belton, on the death of their only son, Walter, who, as a gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery, was shot by a sniper, and died of wounds, at the Dardanelles, on July 19th. He was but 23 years of age.

	Last week it was out regretful duty to record the death at the Dardanelles, on July 19th, of Gunner Walter Emerton, head gardener at Belton House, at the early age of 23. Deceased was an old King’s School boy, and studied there for about six years. Subsequently taking up the trade of butcher, he held situations at Great Malvern and Melton Mowbray, subsequently residing at Upminster, Essex until last October. Then, inspired by the desire to serve his country in its hour of need, he enlisted in the Argyle Battery of the Royal Garrison Artillery. After receiving training at Great Malvern, he proceeded to the Dardanelles, and landed with the first troops that got ashore. He had been in the heat of the fighting ever since. His letters home were couched in most cheerful tones, and he said how much he enjoyed the life, which he “would not have missed for anything.” Unfortunately, he fell victim to a sniper, and died of his wounds, the sorrowful intelligence being sent to his parents by one of the decease’s chums, and also the Battery Commander. The letters are in the following terms – 19th July. 1915. Dear Mr. Emerton, I regret very much to have to inform you that your son, Gunner Emerton, was shot yesterday evening, and, although everything possible was done for him, the hospital have today informed us that he has passed peacefully away. We were not in action at the time, and it appears to have been a sniper who shot him through the left lung. He suffered practically no pain. He is being buried near some of his comrades in the Battery, who have been previously killed, and a clergyman is to officiate. A cross with particulars thereon is be placed on his grave. I am in command of the section in which your son was, and it will be a consolation to know that he was a brave soldier, always cheery, and willing to do his duty, and we miss him very much. Last week it was our pleasure to record that Capt. And Adjt. W. A. Garratt, eldest son of M. and Mrs. R. Garratt, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs R. Garratt, Hurnsfield, Barrowby, had won the Military Cross, but now comes the sad news that their second son, Pte. James Raven Garratt, 1st City of London R.A.M.C. Staff, has died in Salonica, of pneumonia, following influenza. Pte. Garratt was with Messes. Marshall & Snelgrove, Oxford Street, London, when war broke out, and he, together with about forty other members of the staff, joined the Army in that momentous August of 1914. Pte. Garratt, after enlistment, proceeded to Malta, remaining there in a large military hospital. He returned home for a month, on leave, and then left for Salonica, where he had served for the last two years. A letter, dated September 30th, was received from him, stating that he had got influenza, though there were no indications that the illness was serious, but, unhappily four days later a telegram arrived to say he had passed away. The deceased was aged 26

	During the week we have had further vivid reminders of the tragic side of warfare. On Sunday evening, Mr, and Mrs, Grinling, of St Catherine’s were informed of the death of their youngest son, in the following telegram from the Admiralty:- “Deeply regret to inform you Acting-Lieut. C. S. Grinling, R.M., reported killed in action.” Thus has another Granthamian gallantly given his life for his country. The bereaved family, so widely known and esteemed, will have the deepest sympathy of all, Charles Stuart Grinling was only nineteen years of age. He received his education at King’s School and Haileybury College. In July last he passed the Royal Marine examination, and was gazetted Probationary Second-Lieutenant in the R.M.L.I. on August 22nd, and Lieutenant on March 27th last. At both his Schools, the deceased officer was a member of the Cadet Corps, in which he took a keen interest, and in entering the Royal Marines he embarked on a career that had been his most ardent ambition. He went abroad at the end of January last, and had seen service in the Dardanelles, Port Said, Alexandria, and Gallipoli. It is assumed that it was during operations at the latter place, through no definite information is yet to had, that he met his death.

	On Saturday last, Station House, Great Gonerby, received a telegram to say that his only son Mr. R. G. B. Harvey, Second Lieutenant Lincolnshire Regiment) was killed in action, on Christmas Day. The news, which rapidly spread, caused consternation in the village, where the young officer was exceedingly popular. The parents and sisters have received very many tokens of sympathy and regret from a large circle of relatives, friends and acquaintances. On Tuesday, the bereaved parents received letters from the deceased fellow-officers, who gave full details. Lieut.-Col. Harry A, Waring. Commanding Lincolnshire Regiment, wrote:- “I am writing to tell you how exceedingly sorry I am at the death of your son. I have been away from the Battalion for some days, but I believe Major Disney and Capt. Robinson have told you how it happened. I looked on you boy as one of my best officers; he was always ready for anything, and I know the men had a great opinion of him. He is a great loss, and it is particularly hard that he should have met his death in the way he did. I was present at his funeral, and he is buried in a Cemetery that is well looked after, and will be preserved after the war is over.” Major S. C. W. Disney wrote:- “I wish to offer you may deepest sympathy in the loss of your son, Second-Lieut. R. G. B. Harvey. He was wounded by the premature explosion of a rifle grenade, early on Christmas morning, and died shortly afterwards. It is certain that he did not suffer pain, as he was unconscious after a few seconds, and everything possible was done for him. You will have the sympathy of every officer and men in the regiment, and particularly of his own Company-they loved him, and would have followed him anywhere. He was a fine officer, absolutely fearless; would go anywhere, and was never happy unless he was worrying the enemy. He had done some very fine patrol work. He went over on a raid with me in September, and I cannot speak too highly of his conduct that night. We shall all miss his cheery presence from among us, as all his brother officers were very fond of him, and, personally, it is a great loss, All his effects are being forwarded to you. He was buried today, in the British Cemetery, and the regiment will put up a cross this week. If I can do anything for you further, please write to me.” Capt. M. Robinson wrote:- “It is with the deepest regret that I have to inform you of the death of your son, in action, on the morning of the 25th December. His death was caused by a premature burst, and I can assure you he suffered no pain. I cannot speak too highly of your son. I have been out here a long time, and I have never seen a finer or more gallant officer. He was the idol of his men, and loved ny all, always willing for anything, and the first to volunteer for any critical job. I can only offer you this consolation: he did not suffer, and he died fighting for his King and country- a very gallant gentleman. It is a very great blow to me, and I have lost a good friend as well as my right-hand man and it will be a very great time before I recover from this great loss. Please again accept my deepest sympathy, and that of the N.C.O’s and men of my Company. He was buried in a British Cemetery behind the lines, yesterday (26th December) afternoon. If possible, and you would like, I will try and see you when I am next home on leave.” Lieut. Harvey was educated at Grantham Grammar School, and afterwards at Brighton College, under the Rev. W. R. Dawson, M.A. He joined the Artists Rifles (London Regiment), from which he earned his commission in the Lincolnshire Regiment, with whom he trained on the East Coast preparatory to embarking for the Western Front. In a letter to the bereaved parents, the Rev. W. B. Dawson writes:- “I was always so fond and proud of him. He was so frank, so open, so straightforward, so reliable. . . . He lived a splendid life and died a noble death-the noblest death of all. Very pleasant always will be his memories; only with respect and affection will I ever think of him.”

It is with regret that we record the death of another Grantham soldier, in the person of Geo. W. Lane, aged 25 son of Mr. Geo, Lane, Balwell Park, Nottingham. Although not actually a native of Grantham, the deceased received his education at the Grantham Grammar School, and was connected with the Cadet Corps, in which he held the rank of Sergeant. Subsequently he was appointed on the staff of the London City and Midland Bank, Westgate, and after the great recruiting meeting held at the Theatre last year, he, together with six other colleagues from the bank, enlisted, and was the only one accepted. He joined the 7th Lincolns, and underwent his training at Bovington Camp, Dorset. After going to the front, he transferred to the Royal Engineers, and it was while serving with latter regiment that he met with his untimely death. While in Grantham, Corpl Lane was very popular, especially among his colleagues at the Bank, and when he left for the front, they, together with the staff of the branch office in High Street, presented him with a silver wristlet watch as a token of their respect and good wishes.  Corpl. Lane was a keen sportsman and regularly played for his late School at football and cricket. He was also a member of Grantham Golf  Club. The deepest sympathy will be extended to the parents, To whom , we trust, it will be some small comfort to know that he was the first Bank clerk in Grantham to don the khaki for King and country.

	Mr. E. Saxelby, of Syston, Grantham, has received the sad news that his son, Walter, who was seriously wounded in the neck and shoulder on March 39th, passed away four days later. Although only 19 years of age, he had done 12 months training at Grimsby and 3 months in Ireland, previous to going to France.

	Lance Corporal W Saxelby, the news of whose death was received by his mother on October 15th, was the youngest brother of the above. He joined the 2nd Canadian Contingent soon after the commencement of the war, and arrived in England only a short time ago, to complete his training at Shorncliffe. His death, by the explosion of a German mine, is additionally sad, because, as stated elsewhere, his eldest brother has been missing since the Dardanelles operations in August.

	We place on record this week, the death of Lance-Corpl. Alan Louis Shaw, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Shaw, Grantham, the sad event taking place in France last week. It appears that Lance-Corpl. Shaw was in the trenches when a snipers bullet struck some stone boards on the top of the his trench, and, ricocheting, caught him in the spine His brother, Pte Stanley Shaw, accompanied him to the First Base. L. Corpl. Shaw was one of the first, together with his brothers Stanley and Arthur to volunteer. A late scholar of Kings School, Grantham, he was aged thirty-one.

	Since writing the above,[see A.L. Shaw] Pte Stanley Smith has been killed in action. The news was conveyed  to Mr. and Mrs Shaw in a letter written by their son Arthur, who stated that during an attack on Sunday Stanley was killed. Stanley was aged twenty eight and was the third son of Mr. and Mrs A. J. Shaw. He was offered a commission in the Royal Engineers in December last, but at the last moment, declined to accept the honour, preferring not to leave his friends in the 4th Seaforths. Employed as a draughtsman at Messrs R. Hornsby and Sons. Led, and he too was an Old Boy of King’s School, Grantham.  In the realms of sport Stanley like his brother was a motor cycling enthusiast, and a keen member of the Grantham Golf Club.

	Many will learn with regret of the death of Mr. L. C. Southerton, B.A., who was amongst the many brave fellows who lost their lives on board H.M.S. Racoon, totally wrecked a few days ago off the North Coast of Ireland. For two years. Mr. Southerton was an assistant-master at the King’s School. After being rejected for the Army. He succeeded in joining the wireless telegraphy section of the R.N.V.R. Very much liked by the staff and boys of the school, it was generally hoped that he would return to his post after the war. Alas, this now cannot be! We understand the body has been recovered, and interred at Rathmullen.

	Pte. Arthur Henry Strawson, of the Hampshire Regiment, has been killed in action. He was educated at the King’s School, Grantham, where he was a boarder. In private life he was in the service of the London and Midland Textile Insurance Company for about eleven years, the last two of which he occupied as their manager at Southampton. At the outbreak of the war he answered his county’s call by joining the Hampshire Regiment. Subsequent to preliminary training on Salisbury Plain, he embarked for India, 10th October, 1914, being stationed at Allababad. From thence he proceeded to the Persian Gulf, and later to Mesopotamia, where he was reported missing in January. Last Monday his name appeared amongst the “missing, now reported killed.” He leaves a wife and child, who live at Great Gonerby.

	Last week, we recorded the death of Pte. Arthur Henry Strawson, of the Hampshire Regiment. In having been killed in Mesopotamia, and now we publish his photograph. He was educated at the King’s School, Grantham, and for about 11 years was in the employ of the London and Midland Textile Insurance Co. At the outbreak of war, he joined the Hampshire Regiment, and in October proceeded to Allahabad. Afterwards, he was ordered to Mesopotamia. And although reported missing in January, it was only last Monday week that his name appeared among the “Missing, now reports Killed.” He leaves a widow and child, who live at Great Gonerby.
