About the memorial: During WW2, Field Marshal Montgomery used the Board Room at St Paul's School (evacuated for the duration) as his base of operations prior to D-Day. Montgomery was an Old Boy of St Paul's, and in 1946 a plaque in his honour was placed in the Board Room (see WMO/289079). Ten years later, the room was redecorated in his honour, with panelling around the eastern fireplace and this new Latin plaque, dedicated 2nd October 1956. The school moved to Lonsdale Road Barnes in 1968, where the Latin plaque was apparently reinstalled in a meeting room, possibly the 'Montgomery Room'. Translation of Latin inscription: 'In honour of Bernard Law Montgomery, leader of leaders, this room was remade with worthy decorations, and because of the war-like preparations which were made here, and on account of the final victory over Germany, we have dedicated this memorial with thankful hearts.'
