About the memorial: Since early times a Rood Screen has divided the Chancel from the Nave but in 1566 the Screen, which contained images of Mary and John was burnt by the Churchwardens. After the 1914 – 18 World War, the Rood with figures of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St John was restored as a memorial to the men of the parish who had made the great sacrifice. The Screen was given by the Anderson family and the work, as you can see, was beautifully executed by a Leeds firm from oak grown in Lea. To the left of the Screen are two plaques, the stone one giving the names of the four men who fell in the first war, and below a brass plaque remembering the two local men who lost their lives in the 1939-45 War. Exacted from pamphlet "St Helen's Church, Lea"
