About the memorial: The original Ystalyfera War Memorial was a cenotaph erected in 1922 in parkland donated by Colonel Gough, above the town. After years of neglect and vandalism, this was taken down and it was agreed to construct a new, more central, war memorial beside the RBL in Commercial Street, Ystalyfera. Wall made of locally quarried stone, known as 'riverstone'. The stone is from the River Twrch and was historically used to build houses and walls in the village. Five large dedicatory plaques with two smaller plaques below them are mounted on the wall. IWM Register duplicated entry 60545 and 72376.
