About the memorial: A rectangular white marble tablet set on brackets and with a plain base , surmounted by an off white low relief depiction of a cannon on a gun carriage above which is a furled flag with a wreath . Below the tablet is a heraldic shield probably with the arms of the Sotheby family . All this is set on a black marble back board with straight edges at bottom and sides which curve inwards to form a shallow point at the top .The inscription is incised and coloured black .
