A cutting from Varley's Annual of 1924, which is dated 23rd September 1923, describes the memorial: 'The handsome war memorial in connection with Heyside Congregational Church was unveiled. The memorial in bronze on a green marble background, takes the form of the figure of Peace stepping down from a cross. The names of those who fell in the war are inscribed on the memorial.' Some of the fallen named were former pupils of the Blackshaw Lane School, in Royton.
