About the memorial: There is known to have been a memorial at Whitehaven Post Office, from independent Oral history of several former postmen and a long serving postmistress [who died in December 2020 and made many enquiries to trace either the memorial or further information]. However 8 years of investigations have failed to find a report in the Whitehaven News between 1919 and 1930, or any trace of the memorial. Everyone walked past it daily and took little notice of it. Post Office records and the National Postal Museum also have no information- but that has been so in a number of cases where memorials have turned up. So this is merely a record of it's former existence, in the hope that something turns up in the future. It closed as a Post Office in 1994, the building remains vacant as of 29 July 2022.

[unknown]

[unknown]- From the digitised Roll of Honour (see references) the following Whitehaven men are known to have been lost: H S Byers Royal Army Medical Corps, E Gribben and J Todd of the Border Regiment. Edward Gribben is commemorated on various memorials in the town (he was Roman Catholic) and John Todd DCM is on the Roman Catholic Memorials in Whitehaven). However H [enry] S [tagg] Byers is not commemorated on any memorial in the town. According to CWGC he lived in the nearby St Bees (hence the omission). However he is not commemorated on any memorial at St Bees either, but is on the Cleator St Leonard's and Cleator Trumpet Terrace memorials. He was a Medical Doctor and former Chairman of Cleator Moor Urban District Council. For the sake of completeness R Stables (Robert) died in WW2, with the Royal Tank Corps. He is commemorated on the St Nicholas' Church Memorial in Whitehaven.
