About the memorial: Wooden Board- a replacement for the original lost in the 1994 fire The church started as Sherbrooke Free Church, became Sherbrooke United Free Church after the union with the United Presbyterian Church in 1900, then simply Sherbrooke Church in the reconstituted Church of Scotland in 1929. Later, after the Union in 1942 of Sherbrooke and St.Gilbert’s Churches, the church now bears the title Sherbrooke St. Gilbert’s Church. The original church by William McGibbon was ravaged by fire in 1994, its centenary year. In the years leading up to this, the congregation were working towards the full conservation of their historic sanctuary and during the final phase of this extended project the disastrous fire started in the roof. When the fire took hold the beams blazed, the stone spalled, the roof collapsed and the splendid turn of the century stained glass shattered and fell into puddles of molten lead and solder. Demolition teams arrived expectantly and a gathering crowd mourned. Between 2011 and 2020 after a further union the Church is now called Sherbrooke Mosspark Church.
