About the memorial: An information board, in the shape of a sail mounted on a stone plinth set in an enclosed paved area overlooking the area in Balta Sound, Unst, Shetland Isles where HM Submarine E49 was lost when she struck a German mine on 12 March 1917. The board bears the names of the 31 submariners who died, as well as information about HM Submarine E49 and the German U-Boat which laid the mine. Unveiled Date: 12 March 2017 by Mr Harry Edwards and Lieutenant Robert Orr RN with a contingent of Submariners from HM Naval Base Clyde, (who unveiled the memorial). Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.

The Pre-application enquiry form is a series of questions to see if your project is eligible. If it is, you will need to provide further details and submit current colour photographs of the war memorial in either a png, gif, jpg or jpeg format.
