About the memorial: The memorial consists of three separate parts: 1. A brass lamp - Lamp of Maintenance within a wooden box with brass plaques 2. Wooden Board/Display with additional brass plaques 3. Illustrated Parchment within a glassed frame. The Gravesend, Milton and Northfleet Branch of Toc H was granted a Lamp on 4 December 1935 - this was named The Gordon of Khartoum Lamp in memory of Major-General Charles George Gordon CB Royal Engineers killed at Khartoum 26 January 1885. The lamp was kept within a wooden box when not in use and during branch meetings would be lit and placed on a wooden display board. There is also an additional memorial plaque mounted on this board to commemorate a branch member who was killed during WW2. In addition to the board and lamp there is the original petition letter/document that was signed by branch members for recognition of their unit to the status of a branch within the Toc H organisation and a request to be granted a Lamp of Maintenance. This is contained within a glassed frame.
