Status: On original site
Type: Freestanding
Location: External
Setting: Roadside
Description: Wheel cross
Materials:
  • Stone Granite
Conflicts:
  • First World War (1914-1918)
  • Second World War (1939-1945)
About the memorial: Celtic cross on plinth and two stepped base. In 2010 the area around the memorial now has gravel. Evidence that the granite has been cleaned recently. Slight problem with bindweed around the base. The memorial is not so easy to find, turn into the only obvious road into Waterside, past the school, to the track at the end, turn right and follow the track to the end. The property owner is against the memorial being on his land but resigned to the fact that he cannot do anything about it-refer to The Sunday Telegraphy, 2 May 1993: "Witness drums up over war memorial". He is aware that, should there be local agreement to move to an alternative location, the WMT would possibly contribute towards removal costs and he was left with details in 2010. Apparently there is local opposition to it being moved to any alternate location.
