About the memorial: This is a composite memorial made up of a German Type 1 Sea Mine and associated nowy-headed brass plaque referring to the associated WW1 German sea mine. It is not clear at what point the plaque was removed from the sea mine but the sea mine is currently located by the Boating Lake in Cleethorpes. The plaque is located at the address given.

THIS GERMAN MINE WAS LAID IN THE APPROACHES TO THE RIVER HUMBER AND WAS RECOVERED BY THE CREWS OF THE CLEETHORPES AND GRIMSBY MINE SWEEPING TRAWLERS IN THE PERSECUTION OF THEIR DAILY DUTIES. IT IS PRESENTED BY CPT F MASSY DAWSON R.N. PORT MINE SWEEPING OFFICER TO THE URBAN DISTRICT COUNCIL OF CLEETHORPES IN MEMORY OF THE HEROES WHO HAVE PERISHED IN THE PERFORMANCE OF THEIR DUTY DURING THE GRANT OF 1914-17. AND, AS A MEMENTO OF THE PATRIOTISM AND GALLANTRY OF ALL THOSE SEAMEN HAILING FROM THIS GREAT FISHING DISTRICT WHO VOLUNTARILY UNDERTOOK THIS ARDUOUS AND HIGHLY DANGEROUS DUTY OF "SWEEPING THE SEAS.
