About the memorial: A crown surmounts the white text on a pentagonal brass plaque, which is affixed to a polished wooden board. Admiral Giffard, his wife, and two other sons are commemorated on a plaque next to this one. The quote in the last line of text is taken from an anonymous Belgian poem entitled 'The Cross'. The Maritime memorials website incorrectly calls him Robin Bruce, the compiler having failed to notice the surname later in the transcription, Please see Comment about the surname.
