About the memorial: Book on pedestal column resting on 2 tiers, white surround. In 2013 the grave was cleaned and the inscription restored. Flight Sergeant Stares was with 209 Squadron which at the time of his death was operating PBY Catalina aircraft on patrol over the Indian Ocean, from bases in East Africa.
