About the memorial: Brass Plaque on wooden backboard, in the prison chapel. The Parkhurst prison estate has now closed- this memorial is to be relocated. There are no names on the memorial since released prisoners were known only by their Prison numbers. In the report of the unveiling ceremony mention is made of a number of ex-convicts being awarded gallantry awards, including a VC, held by a Salford man who served with the 2nd Bn King's Royal Rifles Corps. This was Rifleman William Mariner. A further memorial paving stone in memory of William Mariner V.C. was unveiled on 22 May 2015 by the Isle of Wight Lord Lieutenant, Major General Martin White, at the prison close by the War Memorial within the grounds.
