About the memorial: Bronze plaque in wooden frame, part of the memorial in the Warrior Chapel. He was born at Calgary, Alberta, Canada, but grew up in New Malden and attended Rokeby Preparatory School, Wimbledon from 1927 to 1932 then Beverley Boys School. New Malden. His great grandfather was Sir Joseph William Bazalgette, responsible for Putney Bridge and the Victoria, Albert and Chelsea Embankments, London, and the great London sewerage scheme. He initially enlisted in the Royal Artillery in 1940 but in 1942 transferred to the RAFVR, joining 115 Squadron in September 1942, taking part in raids on Berlin, Essen, Kiel and St Nazaire. He was awarded the DFC on 29 May 1943 and was posted to 20 OTU at Lossiemouth, then 635 Squadron in April 1944. He was killed in air operations at Senantes, France, piloting a Lancaster bomber on a daylight raid on a V1 storage depot. He was awarded the DFC for his acts in this raid. Nearing the target his aircraft came under heavy anti-aircraft fire, setting the fuselage alight and both starboard engines out of action. In spite of the damage he managed the target before the burning aircraft turned away in a slow spin. He managed to regain some control, flying for a further 30 minutes before ordering the crew to bale out. Landing in a field, the plane immediately exploded killing him and two other crew members. Other memorials to him include a street-Bazalgette Gardens (at New Malden), a painting of him at New Malden Library, a memorial at the Nanton Lancaster Society Museum, Canada and the Ian Bazalgette Junior High School, Canada. His medals are at the Royal Air Force Museum. There is also WMO/72073 to him at Bexwell Church and WMO/230811 at Downham Market Delivery Office.
