About the memorial: Thomas is officially classified as a war casualty. He is buried in Maubeurge-Centre Cemetery, France. He is listed in the Australian War Memorial, Service Number - 20133. The grave in Ainsworth is a memorial, as it gave the family a place to remember. Thomas was born in Ainsworth and migrated to Australia in 1912. When the war started he enlisted in the Australian army and was sent to France. He was gassed and spent a short time in England recuperating. He managed to re-connect with his childhood sweetheart, Emily Garner, and they were married just before the end of September 1918. He went back to the front and died on the 1st of January 1919, from the "Spanish Flu" which spread through the army encampments. This information supplied by Lionel Haslam.
