Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.

The Pre-application enquiry form is a series of questions to see if your project is eligible. If it is, you will need to provide further details and submit current colour photographs of the war memorial in either a png, gif, jpg or jpeg format.

Plaque No 1 THIS HOUSE WAS THE RESIDENCE OF THE / DUKE OF YORK / (AFTERWARDS JAMES II) / OCCASIONALLY DURING THE / DUTH WAR 1665 - 1672 Plaque No 2 Sutherland House dates from 1455 / and was the home of an important / Elizabethan merchant, Thomas Cammel / [Fish symbol] / During the Anglo-Dutch wars / (1655 - 1674) James, Duke of York / (later James II), Lord High Admiral of / the Fleet, established his headquarters / at Sutherland House and directed / his naval operations from here. He / stayed here frequently during that / period along with the Earl of Sandwich. / The house was enriched with two finely ornamented plaster ceilings to / commemorate this fact and both / can still be seen today . [Fish symbol] / On 28th May 1672 the battle of Sole / Bay took place off Southwold and / the Earl of Sandwich died heroically / in the battle. Matthew Wren, cousin / to Sir Christopher Wren was James's / secretary and he wrote his account / of the battle from here.
