Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.

Before applying for a grant you should read the advice available on War Memorials Trust`s website. The What we can and cannot fund helpsheet explains what types of work the charity can fund.

If you believe your project is eligible for a grant you should complete the Pre-application enquiry form. You will need to be registered and logged in to complete this.

The Pre-application enquiry form is a series of questions to see if your project is eligible. If it is, you will need to provide further details and submit current colour photographs of the war memorial in either a png, gif, jpg or jpeg format.

Details of the casualties- From the society website September 2014- Napier Armit is the first of the fallen listed on the memorial. His joining the 16th Battalion of the Royal Scots, under the leadership of Lt Col Sir George McCrae, and his death at the Somme on 4 August 1916 aged 34 is recorded in the book, "McCrae's Battalion" by Jack Alexander, and was the basis of an article in The Scotsman in 2007 by advocate John P Doohan. â€¢ Robert Burns Begg KC (Transvaal), Colonel, Town Commandant Folkestone, died 9 January 1918 aged 45. He was the son of a solicitor from Kinross and joined the Faculty in 1895 but continued his legal career as a barrister in Southern Rhodesia. He became Secretary to the Military Governor of Pretoria, Commissioner of Transvaal Police and Commandant General and Resident Commissioner Northern and Southern Rhodesia. â€¢ Alexander Brown, 2nd Lieut, Royal Scots, 28 April 1917 in France aged 33. Died leading a party which was driven back in fierce fighting. â€¢ John Russel Bruce, Major, 15th Royal Scots, 1 July 1916 in France aged 31. Killed entering German trenches while leading an attack. â€¢ Vincent Connell Bruce, Lieut, Gordon Highlanders, 26 March 1916 in France aged 27. Declared "Missing" after a mine explosion. â€¢ James Clark CB, KC, Lt Col, 9th Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, 10 May 1915 at Ypres aged 56. He had been a member of Edinburgh Town Council, Colonel of the Territorial Battalion and Chairman of Edinburgh Territorial Association. â€¢ James Smith Clark, Lieut, Gordon Highlanders, 3 May 1917 aged 37. The son of a solicitor from Edinburgh, he joined the Bar in 1902 and served as Standing Counsel for Ultimus Haeres. â€¢ James Ferguson KC, Colonel, Royal Scots, 26 April 1917 aged 59. He was Sheriff of Argyll, Inverness and Forfar, and editor of "Deas on Railways" and author of "The Law of Roads" and "The Law of Water". He also wrote military works. â€¢ James Ferguson junior, Major, 9th Royal Scots, 22 July 1916 at the Somme aged 30. He was son of James Ferguson KC, and died only days after the third anniversary of his admission to the Faculty. â€¢ Ivor Forsyth Grant, Lieut, Lovat Scouts, 19 October 1915, at the Dardanelles aged 27. His Colonel wrote: "He volunteered for a dangerous duty and how gallantly he behaved." A brother officer said: "He died quite peacefully and, typically of him, apologising for all the trouble he was giving." â€¢ James Cook Gray MC, Captain, Border Regiment, 22 December 1917 in France aged 27. He saw some of the most desperate fighting of the War and was three times mentioned in despatches, and refused a staff job as he did not wish to leave his comrades for a comparatively "safe" post. â€¢ James Campbell Henderson-Hamilton, Lieut, 9th Black Watch, 27 September 1915 at Loos aged 31, and three months after his marriage. Killed just in front of the German trenches while leading his men in an attack. â€¢ Archibald Wilson Jones, Lt Col, Highland Light Infantry, 22 February 1917 aged 48. He was born in India, the son of a Captain in the Hussars, and had served as a magistrate in Northern Nigeria. â€¢ James Ogilvie Kemp, Captain, Royal Scots, 12 December 1917 aged 52. Before the War, he had been a Captain in the Queen's Edinburgh Rifle Volunteer Brigade, and served as an acting Lt Col in France and as a company commander in Belgium. â€¢ William Harrison Kirkland, Captain, 7th Cameron Highlanders, 25 September 1915 at Loos aged 31. He was credited with being in command of the men who made the farthest advance at the time of any British in the War in France and "died fighting to the last". â€¢ William Lowson, 2nd Lieut, 8th Royal Scots, 17 November 1916 at Beaumont Hamel, France, aged 32. He was hit by machinegun burst while consolidating captured German trenches. â€¢ David Lyell, Lieut, 7th Royal Scots, 12 July 1915 at the Dardanelles aged 27. On the way to Liverpool to sail for Gallipoli, he was in the train following the troop train which was involved in the Gretna Rail Disaster at Quintinshill which claimed some 227 lives. On the day of his death, while waiting orders, he wrote a letter to his mother. It was never finished but was found in his pocket after he was killed by flying shrapnel. â€¢ Walter Scott Stuart Lyon, Lieut, 9th Royal Scots, 8 May 1915 at Ypres aged 28. He was an author of war poetry. One newspaper reported his death, as he tended a wounded man, as the first Advocate killed in action since Flodden. He was the first to fall in the Great War. â€¢ Arthur Stanley Pringle, Captain, 10th Scottish Rifles, 26 September 1915 at Loos aged 38. After his Major was shot, and although wounded himself, he led the battalion. He was left in a shell hole and was believed to have been killed in a German advance. â€¢ John Small, Lieut, 9th Black Watch, 29 April 1916 at Loos aged 29. He had been in France about seven months and died by gas. â€¢ Alexander Taylor, Captain, Royal Scots, 21 April 1917 aged 45. He was Sheriff Substitute of Forfarshire. Wounded at Ypres and a survivor of the Somme, he fell in the Battle of Arras. â€¢ George Muir Thornton, Captain, Seaforth Highlanders, 22 August 1917 in Flanders aged 36. He had fought in France before being killed at a farm about three miles from Ypres. The memorial also carries the names of four intrants: â€¢ David Alexander Beveridge, 2nd Lieut, Royal Field Artillery, on 13 September 1915 aged 28. He died in St Andrew's Hospital, Malta, from dysentery contracted at the Dardanelles. â€¢ James Bruce, Lieut, Royal Field Artillery, 25 July 1917 at Ypres aged 29. He had seen action at the Somme and elsewhere, and was hit by a shell on the eastern bank of the canal at Ypres, on his way to an observing post. â€¢ Gilbert Thomas Gordon, 2nd Lieut, Gordon Highlanders, 28 September 1915 at Loos aged 38. He died while leading his men in a bayonet charge. â€¢ George Buchanan Smith, 2nd Lieut, 3rd Gordon Highlanders, 25 September 1915 at Loos aged 24. Previously wounded and acknowledged for "gallant conduct in the field", he returned to the Front and was selected to lead his platoon in an attack but was killed by a shell. The 27th name is: â€¢ James Archibald Macdonald, Captain, Cameron Highlanders, 22 October 1942 in Libya aged 30. He was the son of Hon Godfrey Evan Hugh Bosville Macdonald, Lieut, Scots Guards, who died, aged 35, in action in the First World War.
