About the memorial: Western Morning News, 11th November 1920: "Lieut.-Col. C. Wynn Tilly, who lost his life in France when commanding the 15th Bn., Yorkshire Regt., leaving a widow and one child, was for 18 years agent of the Membland estate, and for some years a resident at Revelstoke. To commemorate his association with that parish, Sir William Cresswell, Bart., has given the reading and recreation-rooms in Noss Mayo the name of "The Tilly Institute," and handed the buildings over to four resident trustees. The institute possesses one of the best-stocked libraries in any country parish in South Devon, to which visitors, on payment of a very small sum, have access, while residents have it always at hand. A full-size billiard table is within the building. A stone slab will be erected on the outer wall to draw attention to the name of the institute, and a tablet is to be placed within."
