Status: On original site
Type: Freestanding
Location: External
Setting: Outside - hilltop/field/countryside
Description: Vehicle
  • Metal Iron
Lettering: Painted
  • Second World War (1939-1945)
About the memorial: IWM Register 63002 - "Class 91 electric locomotive No. 91110. On the side is a circular plaque with the Flight badge surmounting the nameplate. On the side are painted a Spitfire and a Hurricane in flight and a much larger Flight badge." This is correct though carries no photograph. However, a second IWM entry 85647 carries a photograph of this locomotive with the entirely incorrect information that it is a southern region Battle of Britain Class locomotive. But locomotives of this class were steam engines, now only to be seen on heritage lines such as the Swanage Railway. The two IWM entries therefore need to be seen together with this in mind. I have placed the pin position on King's Cross as it is likely that this locomotive would be a regular visitor there.
