About the memorial: From newspaper reports and website. St. Matthew's Church, Etruria was badly damaged by German bombs in late 1940 and early 1941 as they tried to bomb the Shelton Works (there was already damage from subsidence). The church was thoroughly renovated and re-opened in late 1948. In 1949 four leaded glass replacement windows were dedicated to Bishop of Lichfield with the East window dedicated to the men of Shelton Iron and Steel Works who lost their lives in WW2. By 1960 most of the walls were out of perpendicular and secured by iron ties, the stone arches were also supported. The church was demolished. October 2019: The windows have been found in storage.
